The story follows Valerie Alston (Joanne Whalley-Kilmer), a single mother who is called to serve on the jury for the trial of Rusty Pirone (Armand Assante), a ruthless New York mob boss accused of murder. At first, Valerie takes her civic duty seriously, determined to uphold justice. However, her life is turned upside down when she is approached and threatened by one of Pirone’s enforcers, Tommy Vesey (William Hurt), who warns her that if she doesn’t ensure Pirone’s acquittal, her son’s life will be in danger.
Terrified and torn between her conscience and her maternal instincts, Valerie is forced into a dangerous game of manipulation within the courtroom. Meanwhile, the prosecutor, Daniel Graham (Gabriel Byrne), grows suspicious as the trial unfolds and begins to uncover the pressure Valerie is under.
The film builds tension around Valerie’s moral conflict — whether to sacrifice justice or risk her son’s safety — culminating in a suspenseful and morally ambiguous ending.
Trial by Jury blends courtroom drama with mafia crime elements, exploring themes of coercion, morality, and the fragility of justice under intimidation.
