Dirk Bogarde plays Barrett, a seductive and subtle manservant hired by flamboyant playboy Tony (James Fox) to manage of his newly established household. But Barrett's awe-inspiring efficiency gives way to a suspicious and insidious control, where the roles of master and servant are subtlety reversed.
Written by Harold Pinter, based on the novel by Robin Maughom, "The Servant" is one more example of Joseph Losey's ("Mr. Klein", "Steaming") obsession with character and the English class system. Through their vivid and subtle performances Dirk Bogarde ("A Bridge Too Far", "The Password is Courage") and James Fox ("The Chase", "The Golden Bowl") portray a society on the verge of dissolution. At the time of its release in 1963, the homosexual undertone of "The Servant" disturbed some of the critics, but this one of the very elements which give the films a particular depth when seen today.
