"Pirates" (1986) is a swashbuckling adventure comedy film directed by Roman Polanski and starring Walter Matthau as the grizzled and eccentric pirate captain Thomas Bartholomew Red, also known as “Captain Red.”
After being stranded at sea with his loyal but naive young companion Jean-Baptiste “Frog” (played by Cris Campion), Captain Red manages to seize control of a Spanish galleon, the Neptune, which is carrying a priceless golden throne intended for the King of Spain.
The film follows Red’s relentless — and often bungled — attempts to claim the treasure as his own, all while contending with mutinous crew members, the ship’s pompous Spanish captain, and the complications of Frog’s romantic interest in Dolores (played by Charlotte Lewis), a noblewoman aboard the ship.
Blending slapstick humor, grand naval battles, and lavish production design, Pirates serves as both a parody and homage to classic pirate films. Despite its ambitious scope and Polanski’s attention to detail, the movie struggled at the box office but later gained a modest cult following for its eccentric characters and elaborate period visuals.
