In the turbulent 1930s, the grumpy bookmaker Sorrowful Jones leads a reclusive life. When a desperate gambler leaves his six-year-old daughter as collateral for a bet and then tragically dies, Sorrowful is suddenly faced with the responsibility of caring for the girl.
