In the turbulent 1930s, the grumpy bookmaker Sorrowful Jones leads a reclusive life. When a desperate gambler leaves his six-year-old daughter as collateral for a bet and then tragically dies, Sorrowful is suddenly faced with the responsibility of caring for the girl. He reluctantly accepts the role of surrogate father, but the presence of the bright little girl upsets his orderly life. Supported by the charming Amanda Worthington and confronted by the shady gangster Blackie, Sorrowful discovers that there is more to life than numbers and betting.
