Josef von Sternberg and Marlene Dietrich concluded their seven-film collaboration with The Devil Is a Woman, adapted from the novel by Pierre Louÿs. Dietrich plays Conchita, a cigarette factory girl turned femme fatale living in Spain. Her current beau is Antonio (Cesar Romero, Donovan’s Reef), but Don Pasqualito (Lionel Atwill, Doctor X), an older man, has never stopped loving her… A fitting swansong, this beautifully realised romance won Lucien Ballard the award for Best Cinematography at the 1935 Venice Film Festival.
