En fullständigt grotesk situation, där den enda som kommer att lämna ön är den som har överlevt slakten efter att ha mördat sin bästa vän, pojkvän eller flickvän.
Alltihop övervakas av helikoptrar och datorer under ledning av den galne läraren och "lekledaren" Kitano (spelad av Takeshi "Beat" Kitano).
BATTLE ROYALE blev en jättelik skandalsuccé i Japan och har skapat stor uppståndelse där den släppts i övriga världen. Paralleller kan dras till "Flugornas herre" och filmens tema om överlevnad är också högaktuellt i det mediabrus av dokusåpor som finns idag, med program som "Expedition Robinson" i spetsen.
