In Montreal, the ambitious Jeffrey Byron (Jonny Lee Miller) is about to close another lucrative deal. Although he is young, he has a sharp business instinct. He dedicates his substantial earnings to fulfilling his greatest passion: himself. His wife Marianne (Lara Flynn Boyle) is displeased with his excessive dedication to work and feels frustrated by her inability to fulfill her desire to become a mother. Across the city lives Lucky "the fixer" Mann (Nick Nolte), a contractor specializing in construction and repairs, who is married to Phyllis (Julie Christie), a former B-movie actress. When Marianne hires Lucky to renovate her apartment, the lives of all four will take an unexpected turn.
