When a shipment of gold is stolen from the Southern Pacific Railroad Company, Mike Sturges and his brother Roy are accused of the crime. They are thrown into the hellish Yuma State Prison and forced to do hard labor under the supervision of sadistic guard Bill Savage, who has a penchant for torturing prisoners. Roy is soon dead and Mike leads a prison break in his quest for justice. With the help of a kind-hearted prostitute and his ex-girlfriend, Mike sets out to hunt down the men who framed him.
In his last film appearance, muscle star Steve Reeves is convincing as a charismatic western hero in search of justice. I am an escaped convict offers everything the Italo-Western heart desires: rugged desert flair, ruthless opponents, dramatic revenge motifs and powerful action scenes. The careful staging, supported by an atmospheric soundtrack and solid supporting characters, makes the film an exciting genre contribution with nostalgic charm. A worthy farewell for Reeves and an insider tip for western fans!
