Beaudray Demerille (Peter Fonda) travels as a gambler through the Wild West, always in search of a worthwhile poker game. One day he wins the orphan girl Wanda Nevada (Brooke Shilds) at a game, but she does not know if she made a lucky catch with her new "Mr.". But the locked Beaudray has a good heart, she soon realizes, even if she has problems "thawing" him. Together, the unequal couple rides to the Grand Canyon, where the two want to search for a lost gold mine of the Apaches. But also two insidious criminals, Ruby Muldoon and Strap Pangburn, are looking for the treasure. And to them, every means seems right.
