The Queen of Country was born in sleepy Butcher Hollow, Kentucky in 1935. At the age of just 14 she married Oliver “Mooney” Lynn and was to become a full-time mother for her four children, devoting herself to the family for the first ten years, after which she performed her own songs with brother Jay Lee Webb and his backing band. But there was to be another ten years of performing in clubs and bars before she was spotted in 1959 by Zero Records, who gave her a recording contract.
Her debut single in 1960 became a hit although it took a lot of promotional pushing by Loretta and her husband “Mooney” before it was noticed by the right people, including recording giants Decca, who recognised her talent and went on to make her one of their biggest country stars. Through the 60s and 70s she achieved huge success in the charts including four number one hits, and further enhanced her popularity by teaming up with Conway Twitty, notching up a further five number one’s from this professional urion.
