Chance Buckman (John Wayne) är en hårdhudad brandman från Texas som tämjer vilda bränder runtom i världen. I sitt team har han bland andra Jack Lomax (Jay C. Flippen), Joe Horn (Bruce Cabot) och medhjälparen Greg Parker (Jim Hutton). På det känslomässiga planet har Chance ännu inte kommit över Madelyn, hans före detta fru, som lämnade honom 20 år tidigare på grund av hans farofyllda tillvaro. Greg å sin sida har händerna fulla – både vid pokerbordet och i sovrummet, tillsammans med Chances eldiga dotter Tish (Katharine Ross).
