How can we know the future? This episode sets out how the tree time periods in the future were chosen, and why? The international team of scientists behind the series selected 5 million, 100 million and 200 million years from now.
THE VANISHED SEA
In five million years time, the combination of Africa moving north to seal off the straits of Gibraltar, and the lack of moisture has resulted in the Mediterranean drying out. It is almost impossible to live out on the salt flats, but one small lizard has managed, and so has the flats to itself, apart from billions of brine flies.
PRAIRIES OF AMAZONA
Its 5 million years in the future, and the drop in mean global temperatures and dry climate have had a pronounced effect in the Amazon Basin. They have been replaced by large areas of dry savannah grassland. The savannah is home to the bizarre looking babookari monkeys, which roam the grasslands in the family groups. Rattlebacks donit worry about the fires. These solitary are supremely adapted with the fire-proof scales.
