When King Vittorio Amadeo first sees his Chamberlain's new wife Jeanne, he falls in love with her. She rejects his advances believing the love she shares with her husband is pure and true. The King sends her husband away on a mission to Spain and makes Jeanne's life unbearable. The relationship, full of enmity on Jeanne's side, and love on the King's, continues until Jeanne runs away, back to France. But, once away from him, she fi nds that she has made a terrible mistake.
