This box-set contains four films made in the 1980s by acclaimed French New Wave director Alain Resnais. “Alain Resnais rivals Jean-Luc Godard as the most challenging film-maker of the New Wave era. Complex, uncompromising and mischievously controlled, his work is both cinematic and literary, acerbic and compassionate, and no one else could have produced the four films in this mid-80s selection.” (David Parkinson in moviemail)
LIFE IS A BED OF ROSES (1983):
Divided into three related short stories, LIFE IS A BED OF ROSES is Alain Resnais’ tribute to three of France’s most influential filmmakers – Geroges Méliès, Marcel L’Herbier and Eric Rohmer.
LOVE UNTO DEATH (1984):
Simon (Pierre Arditi) and his wife Elizabeth’s (Sabine Azema) happy marriage is suddenly put to the test when he suffers a near-fatal seizure. Although he recovers miraculously, Simon becomes obsessed with his own mortality.
MÉLO (1986):
Loosely based on Henri Bernstein’s celebrated play, MÉLO tells the story of Marcel and Pierre – two lifelong friends and celebrated concert violinists who lives begin to take very different paths. While Marcel’s career leads him to stardom, Pierre has decided to settle into family life with his beautiful wife, unaware of the devastation that’s soon to follow.
I WANT TO GO HOME (1989):
Legendary Hollywood composer and lyricist Adolph Green plays Joey Wellman - a can- tankerous American cartoonist who uses an invitation to exhibit his work in Paris as an excuse to visit his daughter, who’s become obsessed with a French Professor (Gérard Depardieu). Alain Renais has created an amusing satire on American and French cultures, which also includes a sparkling score from Oscar winning composer John Kander (Cabaret).
