An unbalanced girl (Farrow) becomes convinced that ageing prostitute Leonora (Taylor) is her dead mother. Grieving the recent death of her own daughter, Leonora plays out the pretence, and a bizarre relationship begins to form between the two women. Yet soon the brute force of reality descends as secrets from the past unfold, threatening their fragile dream world.
